Talking with Latter-day Saints Through a Christian Lens
An interactive, magazine-style guide to understanding why these conversations often feel difficult, where the deepest doctrinal differences lie, and how Christians can speak with both theological clarity and pastoral grace.
Why These Conversations Stall
The difficulty is rarely just social awkwardness. It usually comes from deeper differences in authority, doctrine, and vocabulary. Shared religious words can hide radically different meanings.
Different starting points
Reformed Christianity begins with Scripture alone as the final authority. LDS theology includes additional scripture and continuing revelation.
Different definitions
Words like grace, faith, and salvation may sound familiar while functioning inside very different theological systems.
Different expectations
One side may ask for biblical proof while the other appeals to spiritual confirmation, prophetic authority, or testimony.
The Real Issue Beneath the Tone
From a reformed perspective, Mormonism is not simply another Christian denomination with a few unusual features. The deepest concerns are theological: the nature of God, the identity of Christ, the authority of Scripture, and the doctrine of salvation.
That is why the conversation can feel disorienting. There may be deep sincerity, moral seriousness, and constant reference to Jesus, while the doctrinal structure underneath remains fundamentally different from historic biblical Christianity.
Interactive Doctrine Comparison
Use the tabs to compare LDS teaching and the reformed biblical position on the core doctrines that most often determine the direction of the conversation.
Godhead
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are understood as distinct beings united in purpose rather than one God in three persons of one essence.
Holy Trinity
There is one true and living God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Historic Christian orthodoxy does not treat this as optional theology but as essential doctrine.
Jesus in a different system
Jesus is central and honored as Savior and Son of God, yet His identity is presented within a theology that departs from the historic Christian doctrine of God.
The eternal Son
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, the eternal Son and only mediator. To alter His identity is to alter the message of salvation itself.
Grace with covenant structure
Grace is affirmed, but ordinances, covenant obedience, and persevering faithfulness have a larger structural place in how salvation is described.
Grace alone through faith alone
Sinners are justified by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Good works matter, but only as fruit, never as the ground of acceptance before God.
Expanded authority
The Bible is valued alongside additional scripture and ongoing prophetic revelation.
Sola Scriptura
Scripture alone is the only infallible rule of faith and practice. No later revelation can stand beside it as equal authority.
Texts That Anchor Christian Discernment
Christ Alone
The question is not whether Jesus is mentioned, but whether the true biblical Christ is being proclaimed.
Read John 14:6Grace Alone
The gospel of free grace remains a dividing line between historic Protestant Christianity and systems that blur gift and merit.
Read Ephesians 2:8-9Another Gospel
Scripture warns the church to reject any rival gospel, even one wrapped in supernatural claims.
Read Galatians 1:8-9Glossary Translator

Faith
In reformed theology, saving faith means receiving and resting upon Christ alone for salvation. In LDS discourse, faith often appears within a larger pattern of covenant action, obedience, and religious progression. The overlap in wording should not hide the difference in structure.
Grace
The crucial question is not whether grace is affirmed, but what grace actually accomplishes. Reformed Christianity proclaims grace as the sole basis of justification in Christ. Systems that fold grace into a larger performance framework are teaching something materially different.
Gospel
For the reformed Christian, the gospel is the finished work of Christ for sinners. It is news to believe before it becomes a life to live. The order matters.
Authority
The deepest apologetic question is often this: what has the final word? If Scripture can be expanded or corrected by later revelation, the conversation will keep returning to rival foundations.
How to Respond as a Reformed Christian
Start with first principles
Ask direct, foundational questions: Who is God? Who is Jesus? What is the final authority? How is a sinner justified before a holy God? These questions expose the real issues much faster than chasing every secondary topic.
Keep Scripture central
Gently return the discussion to the Bible. From a reformed standpoint, personal testimony and later revelation must be tested by the written Word, not the other way around.
Refuse both arrogance and vagueness
Christian humility does not mean doctrinal hesitation. Speak plainly about the gospel, but do so as someone rescued by grace, not as someone scoring points.
Stay focused on the gospel
The single best conversation question is often this: “On what basis can a sinner be fully accepted before God?” If the answer is anything other than Christ received by faith, the doctrinal gap becomes visible.
